Pak Army withdrawal from Malakand approved by KP govt

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government declared on Saturday that withdrawal of troops from Malakand partition would begin next month and the municipal administration would take over command of the locality.

Shiraz Paracha, representative for head Minister Pervez Khattak, said the withdrawal could start in mid-October.

In the first stage, troops would be pulled out from Buner and Shangla localities. The representative said the head minister had accepted the plan and ‘everybody’ had been consulted.

The broadcast arrives at a time when the federal government is preparing to launch calm converses with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the lightweight of conclusions of an all-party seminar.

The armed detachment was called out by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government in 2007 to aid the administration in parts of Malakand partition to quell militancy in the mountainous region. The partition comprises Swat, Buner, Shangla, top Dir, smaller Dir, Chitral and Malakand districts.

When some militant assemblies, directed by Mullah Fazlullah, established a aligned management in Swat, Buner and other adjoining districts and begun brutalities, the armed detachment commenced an procedure in May 2009. The air force aided the armed detachment.

Khattak said that departure of armed detachment from these two localities would be pursued by a phase-wise withdrawal from top Dir, smaller Dir and Swat where ‘the writ of the government has been consolidated’.

Khattak said that the army was established in the Malakand division due to expanding activities of the Taliban in 2007.

The security forces had suggested innumerable sacrifices to clear the locality and refurbish calm and now ‘hundreds of replaced persons are back’.

The head minister said that the KP government liked to determination all matters through talks and it has been successful in sustaining the writ of the government.

The inhabitants of Malakand have conveyed their reservations time and afresh about the militants’ threat from over the border where the Fazlullah-led Taliban have protected heavens in Nuristan and Kunar provinces and launch attacks in top Dir, smaller Dir and in Bajaur bureau as well.
